The Jersey Devil: Part IV

Interviewing Mrs. Kelly (Past):

“What can I do for you, Jay?”

Mrs. Kelly was her usual perky and happy self. She never failed to greet him with a smile. It was just one of the many things that made her his favorite teacher at the school. Of course, her lack of judgment was at the top of the list too.

“Well, I’ve done some research and I need some help.”

“You’ve come to the right place.” She moved a stack of books to the side and replaced them with her keyboard. “Where should we start?”

Jay pulled out a folder from his backpack and placed it on the counter. “I know this isn’t going to be easy, but I was wondering if you could shed some light on some of your old classmates.”

Mrs. Kelly opened the folder and moved through the seven pictures. The smile from the always-happy Mrs. Kelly faded and her face became grim. Her eyes glazed over, her lips quivered, and her hands caressed the pictures like they were priceless artifacts.

“Jay, I can’t.”

“I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important. I think—I know what happened to them is going to happen again.”

“What happened was a tragic one-time thing—”

“Mrs. Kelly, please. If nothing happens, then great. I’m just another fool who got tricked into chasing an urban legend. But if I’m right, then more of the students here will meet the same fate.”

Mrs. Kelly took a deep breath, turned, and waved. “Come on.”

Jay followed Mrs. Kelly into her office and took a seat across from her desk. She closed the door and took a seat. Sitting behind her desk, Mrs. Kelly was as still as a statue.

Jay cleared his throat. “Thanks for doing this.”

“What do you want to know?” she almost whispered.

Jay opened the folder and handed over the first picture. “What was he like?”

Mrs. Kelly grabbed the picture. “Timmy Robinson was…a good kid. I mean, sure he had his faults. What teen doesn’t?”

Jay had just pulled out his notepad and pen. He clicked on the pen and asked, “What was Timmy’s fault?”

“He was highly skilled at taking things that weren’t his. The funny thing is that his family was extremely wealthy and Timmy could buy anything he wanted, but the classic five-finger discount was appealing. He never stole wallets, valuables, or anything that could get him into real trouble. Timmy solely took things that didn’t matter, like candy, but he would resell them at school.”

“The rich get richer,” Jay mumbled.

“I’m sorry?”

Jay shook his head. “Nothing. Is that all?”

Mrs. Kelly shrugged her shoulders. “Though we are a small community, it’s easy not to know a lot. You should know what more than anyone.” Jay nodded. “We all have a group and only know what’s on the surface with those not in it.”

“I like that and may use it if you don’t mind.” Jay handed over the next picture. “What about Amber and Tiffany Moore?”

Mrs. Kelly sniffed and turned her head. “I was close to Tiffany; she was like a sister. We were constantly together and always had our noses in a book.
